Charles Yang

Charles Yang is a fellow at Renaissance Philanthropy, where he supports the AI for Science portfolio.
Charles draws on his deep experience across technical domains and high-impact policymaking. Previously, he was an AI policy advisor at the Department of Energy, where he helped stand up the Department's Frontiers in AI for Science, Security, and Technology (FASST) initiatives and organized an AI hackathon for expediting environmental permitting. Before joining the policy world, he was a Machine Learning engineer at an AI hardware startup in the San Francisco Bay Area. He also spent some time as a researcher at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, focused on AI for optical metamaterials and composite design.
Charles graduated from U.C. Berkeley with a B.S. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. He is also a member of Interact, the Policy Entrepreneurs Network, and Emergent Ventures community.
