Job Description
As the Technical Associate (or Senior Technical Associate), AI for Math at Renaissance Philanthropy, you will play a key role in scaling and shaping our emerging work at the intersection of AI and Mathematics. This is a rare opportunity to help build a globally significant initiative from the ground up—engaging top technical talent, reviewing ambitious proposal ideas, and launching ambitious field ideas for the public good. You’ll work closely with our Principal Scientist and AI for Math Team, supporting long-term vision while owning critical technical operations and ecosystem building work.
Preference for someone who can work from one of our office hub locations in New York, D.C. or London.
We offer a full healthcare package, 5% automatic 401(k) contribution (US) or pension match (UK), additional $550/month (US) or £395/month (UK) for fringe benefits, and base salary. The base salary ranges for this role are as follows:
Technical Associate: $100,000 - $135,000 in New York or D.C., and £70,000 - £95,000 in London
Senior Technical Associate: $135,000 - $150,000 in New York or D.C., and £95,000 - £105,000 in London.
Role and Responsibilities
[Essential] Technical Projects & Support:
Provide objective, evidence-backed assessments of technical proposals in the AI for Mathematics and formal verifications domains, supporting the review processes of key program operations for the AI for Math Fund (core grants, seed grants, field scanning, opportunity explorations).
Build and evaluate systems and prototypes to analyze and support the program’s operation and more effectively identify opportunities. Examples include building analytics systems, validating technical solutions from grantees and exploring proofs of concept as needed.
Contribute to technical diligence of grant proposals, helping assess Mathematical rigor or machine learning relevance in close collaboration with the Principal Scientist.
Partner with the Principal Scientist to identify and implement backend automations that improve review efficiency and program execution.
Support exploration of new program models, such as tiered grants or special funding calls, by gathering insights from the field and helping to design pilot structures.
Prepare briefing materials and strategic analyses that inform long-term vision and help identify new opportunities for the AI for Math program.
[Essential] Field Building & Ecosystem Development:
Design, develop, and support field building initiatives to help advance the AI for Math Fund’s objectives, e.g., designing hackathons and setting their objectives and technical stack, setting curricula for summer schools, delivering technical talks.
Establish and maintain working relationships with key technical stakeholders across the AI for Math field.
Represent the program at key technical venues worldwide, e.g., ITP, NeurIPS, ICML.
Serve as a key driver of our efforts to grow and strengthen the AI + Math ecosystem by building and maintaining relationships with leading researchers, technical advisors, prospective applicants, and institutional partners.
Organize and execute a range of field-building activities, including hackathons, lecture series, seminars, and technical convenings to surface and support outstanding talent.
[Supplementary] Project Management:
Support end-to-end program operations for grant cycles and proposal review processes, including managing backend automations and workflow tracking to keep internal teams and external reviewers aligned.
Maintain internal systems (e.g., Airtable, Slack integrations, shared dashboards) that provide clear insight into deliverables, owners, and timelines across workstreams.
Liaise with internal (e.g., Finance, HR, programs) and external (e.g., grantees, reviewers) stakeholders, including ownership of stakeholder communications.
Own preparation of team meetings and program check-ins, ensuring agendas are set, action items are tracked, and follow-ups are completed.
Key Qualifications
A PhD in mathematics, computer science or related scientific discipline
Strong analytical skills, and rigorous evaluation ability
[BONUS] Familiarity with the basic machine learning technical stack (Python, PyTorch) and theorem provers (Lean, Isabelle)
Nice to have
Professional experience in relevant areas such as machine learning, interactive theorem proving, formal verification, and academic research.
Demonstrated ability to take initiative, solve problems independently, and build systems or processes; familiarity with tools like Airtable (or a willingness to learn and configure) is a strong plus.
Excellent relationship-building and communication skills, able to engage stakeholders from world-class researchers to philanthropic partners with professionalism and enthusiasm.
A genuine passion for social impact and advancing ambitious ideas, such as at the intersection of Math, AI, and public good.
